Andrew Hozier-Byrne, in arte Hozier, è nato a Bray nella contea di Wicklow. È diventato celebre al grande pubblico mondiale per la sua “Take me to church”, brano che ha sbancato – oltre 2 miliardi di streaming e 4 milioni di copie vendute – svettando nelle classifiche di vendita d’Europa e degli Stati Uniti. In particolare la canzone è stata nominata nella categoria “Song of the year” ai Grammy Awards 2015, dopo aver ottenuto una candidatura agli MTV Europe Music Awards 2014 nella categoria “Best Song With a Message”. Ha raggiunto il terzo posto nella Billboard Hot 100 e la prima posizione in Italia (dati FIMI).

Hozier a Sanremo
Ospite della terza serata del Festival di Sanremo 2016, il cantante irlandese ha eseguito il celebre brano “Take me to church” e nel 2022 è tornato con i Meduza per cantare “Tell It To My Heart”. Classe 1990, l’irlandese non è stato impeccabile sul palco dell’Ariston, ma ad ogni modo è riuscito a raggiungere il suo pubblico. La sua carriera internazionale, legata al singolo di esordio, lo ha portato verso il successo soltanto verso la metà del 2014. Il pezzo prende corpo dalla frustrazione del cantautore Hozier nei confronti degli insegnamenti della Chiesa Cattolica. In un’intervista a Rolling Stone il cantante ha dichiarato: “Crescendo ho sempre notato l’ipocrisia della chiesa cattolica. La storia parla da sé e crescendo ho maturato solo rabbia e frustrazione e nella canzone ho semplicemente messo per iscritto questi sentimenti”.
